SUMMARY:Ultra-processed Foods: Are they responsible for obesity & chronic disease? | Journal Club with Pete Shaw & Bob Kaplan
DESCRIPTION:Bob and Pete will dive into the world of ultra-processed foods. Those interested in health are hard pressed to disagree with the fact that ultra-processed foods are bad for you. Has it become dogma to blame these foods for our health issues? Some questions need to be answered: \nWhat defines an ultra-processed food? \nAre they the villain behind the chronic disease and obesity epidemics? \nIs it the processing or is it an ingredient? \nIs there more to the story? \nFeatured papers: \n\nMonteiro et al. (2019): Ultra-processed foods: what they are and how to identify them\nDavid S. Ludwig (2025): Ultraprocessed Food on an Ultrafast Track\n\nBecome a member of The Medical Society today for access to this discussion and our entire archive of past sessions.

SUMMARY:The NFL & Brain Injury Research with Chris Nowinski | Trust Issues Ep 3
DESCRIPTION:What happens when billion-dollar sports collide with inconvenient science? \nThe NFL’s concussion crisis is the case study. League-funded researchers downplayed CTE\, discredited whistleblowers\, and stalled accountability even as the evidence mounted\, a clear example of how powerful institutions distort science when the truth threatens their interests. \nHosted by Karen Thomson\, Dr. Mary Dan Eades\, and Mia Kotalik (@helloitsmia.tech) — with special guest Chris Nowinski\, American neuroscientist\, author\, and retired professional wrestler.

SUMMARY:'Black box’ safety warning to be removed from hormone therapy for menopause | Trust Issues Ep 2
DESCRIPTION:For 23 years\, doctors were legally required to terrify women about the one treatment that could have changed their lives. \nThis week\, the FDA finally admitted they got it catastrophically wrong. The black box warning on hormone replacement therapy? Gone. \nFifty million women were denied relief from menopause symptoms—hot flashes\, brain fog\, bone loss\, sleep disruption—because of a study that’s been debunked for years. \nEven the FDA’s own commissioner called it “one of the greatest screw-ups in modern medicine.” \nAnd while they’re patting themselves on the back\, Procter & Gamble is selling a $40 menopause test kit that lawsuits say is built on fraudulent science. Bad studies. Corporate profit. Women’s suffering. \nIt’s the same story on repeat. They finally told the truth about HRT after 23 years. How many more decades before they admit what they’re lying about now?

SUMMARY:Journal Club with Bob Kaplan and Peter Shaw – A Primer on the ROS Hypothesis of Obesity Pt 2
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Journal Club webinar with Bob Kaplan and Peter Shaw as they will continue to delve into the ROS Hypothesis of Obesity. \nRather than viewing all reactive oxygen species (ROS) as a negative responses\, this article proposes that ROS aren’t just harmful byproducts of metabolism\, but critical signals that regulate insulin sensitivity. We’ll explore how insulin actually relies on ROS to amplify glucose and fat uptake\, how excess ROS feed back to limit further nutrient entry\, and how different dietary fats shape this signaling. \nThe full article can be found here. \nMissed part 1? SUMMARY:Live Webinar with Matt Miller – Motivational Interviewing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live webinar with Matt Miller. \nCoaching isn’t just about movement and programming—it’s also about conversation. Yet most coaches haven’t been trained to guide dialogue with the same rigor they bring to physical training. This webinar introduces the key principles of OARS: The Art and Science of Uncomfortable Conversations and explores how Motivational Interviewing (MI) provides an evidence-based framework for helping people change—without pressure or gimmicks. \nWe’ll also touch on the Transtheoretical Model of Change\, giving you practical tools to recognize where a client is in their journey and adjust your approach. Just as we teach physical skills\, we can also teach communication strategies that build trust\, reinforce effort\, and create high-agency environments for lasting results. \nBecome a member of The Medical Society today for free access to this webinar and our entire archive of past sessions.

SUMMARY:Live Webinar with Jen Garrett & Dan Egloff– Beyond the Prescription Pad
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live webinar with Jen Garrett & Dan Egloff as they share how she implements MetFix in her gym—both as an affiliate owner and coach. \nBecome a member of The Medical Society today for free access to this webinar and our entire archive of past sessions. \nTogether\, Jen and Dan created an interdisciplinary initiative to equip future PAs with tools to treat chronic disease through lifestyle-first strategies—rooted in the principles championed by Greg Glassman and foundational to the MetFix model. \nBy embedding real-world training in exercise and nutrition into a clinical year workshop\, students significantly increased their ability and willingness to recommend non-pharmaceutical interventions. The program emphasized actionable care plans\, patient empowerment\, and measurable outcomes—all while challenging the limitations of conventional medical training. Planning and execution strategies for replicating this model will also be shared\, including partnership development and pre/post survey design. \nJen\, the program lead\, has practiced as a PA since 1999 across oncology\, gastroenterology\, and transplant medicine. She joined Mount St. Joseph in 2019 and currently serves as Program Director. Her leadership in merging evidence-based movement and nutrition into clinical education reflects a growing shift in how we train healthcare providers to think—and act—differently.

SUMMARY:Journal Club with Bob Kaplan and Peter Shaw – Exploring Metabolic Potential in High-Intensity Domains
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Journal Club webinar with Bob Kaplan and Peter Shaw as they dive deep into this study and explore the potential of fatty acid metabolism as a primary energy source for high-intensity outputs in fat adapted athletes. \nDespite mounting evidence supporting a broad spectrum of benefits resulting from high-fat low-carb (HFLC) diets\, this eating strategy is sometimes described as ‘specialized’ to chronic disease treatment\, such as Type 2 diabetes\, while high-performing athletes tout carbohydrate intake as the key to fueling high-intensity outputs. A 2023 study by Prins et al. challenges the concept of essential glucose metabolism for high-performance. \nThe study we will be covering can be found here. \nBecome a member of The Medical Society today for free access to this webinar and our entire archive of past sessions.
