My journey to becoming a gym owner is best explained by what I chose NOT to do. In the early days of my career, I was in school studying to become a Physical Therapist. As I contrasted my work in the gym with the time spent in a physical therapy clinic, I realized my purpose was best fulfilled with regular, personal contact over long periods of time; this was not something I could experience within the protocols of the clinic. Opening a gym was a natural progression from caring for one person, then their spouse and children, then their friends, and eventually so many it could no longer be done one-on-one. I started teaching small groups, then classes and eventually the classes were too big for my little garage and we leased our first space.
My mission started out as “get them a good workout” and even “make them sore.” But early in my work I realized that what I was doing was too important for them to be dependent on me. So my mission changed and became “educate them so they can take responsibility for themselves and control their health toward a better future.”
The most gratifying experience of my life has been witnessing people permanently improve as a direct result of the work they did within the opportunities I provided. This is why my mission remains steady and I’ve persisted in my work no matter the storms and changing tides.
