The Soft Science of Dietary Fat
How uncertain evidence became decades of low-fat dietary advice
In this landmark Science article from 2001, Gary Taubes traces the history of the low-fat diet hypothesis, arguing that public health recommendations became accepted long before the evidence was conclusive. He reviews decades of research and concludes that, while lowering cholesterol in high-risk individuals can reduce cardiovascular events, the evidence that low-fat diets prolong life or reduce heart disease in the general population has remained surprisingly weak and inconsistent. He also explores how politics, media coverage, and scientific consensus shaped dietary guidelines despite ongoing disagreement among researchers.

Can Intermittent Fasting Reduce Cancer Risk?
Review suggests intermittent energy restriction may improve cancer-related biomarkers
This review examines evidence from animal and human studies on whether intermittent energy restriction (IER) and intermittent fasting (IF) can reduce cancer risk or slow tumor development. In rodent models, many—but not all—studies found that intermittent restriction reduced the development of certain tumors, particularly mammary tumors. The benefits were generally greatest when fasting protocols substantially lowered overall calorie intake and suppressed insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), though results varied depending on the tumor type and fasting regimen.

The Effects of Vigorous Intensity Exercise in the Third Trimester of Pregnancy
Systematic review finds that vigorous exercise appears safe for most healthy pregnancies
This systematic review and meta-analysis examined 15 studies involving more than 32,000 pregnancies to evaluate whether vigorous exercise during the third trimester affects maternal or infant outcomes. The researchers found no evidence that vigorous exercise increased the risk of low birth weight, babies being small for gestational age, or excessive maternal weight gain. Women who exercised vigorously also experienced a slightly longer average gestation and a modest reduction in the risk of preterm birth.

If Cancer Loves Sugar, Why Do We Keep Feeding It?
The Warburg effect, sugar, and the disconnect between cancer biology and dietary advice.
An animated look at the Warburg effect—the observation that cancer cells consume glucose at exceptionally high rates, a principle used in PET imaging. It also examines research on sugar, insulin, fasting, and cancer metabolism, and why dietary strategies receive relatively little emphasis in conventional cancer care despite growing interest in metabolic therapies.

Fundamentals, Virtuosity and Mastery
Mastery comes from performing the basics exceptionally well
Coach Glassman uses gymnastics to illustrate the difference between simply avoiding mistakes and achieving true mastery. While risk and originality can make a performance more impressive, virtuosity—"performing the common uncommonly well"—is what distinguishes the very best. Beginners are often too eager to skip the fundamentals in pursuit of more advanced skills, a mistake that ultimately slows progress.

Do Fatty Acids Build More Mitochondria?
Higher fatty acid levels promoted mitochondrial growth in skeletal muscle
Researchers investigated whether raising circulating free fatty acid (FFA) levels could stimulate the production of new mitochondria in skeletal muscle. In rats, sustained elevations in FFAs increased the expression of enzymes involved in fat oxidation, the citric acid cycle, and the electron transport chain, while also increasing mitochondrial DNA and the muscle's capacity to oxidize fat. Together, these findings indicate that fatty acids do more than provide fuel—they can signal muscle cells to build more mitochondria.

How much Medical Science Fraud is out there?
Vinay Prasad argues that scientific fraud is a systemic problem.
Using the downfall of former Stanford president Marc Tessier-Lavigne as a starting point, Vinay Prasad argues that scientific misconduct is not limited to a few dishonest researchers. He says the larger problem is a system that rewards dramatic findings, publication volume, grant funding, and prestige while doing too little to encourage replication, transparency, and correction of the scientific record.
