How common are conflicts of interest in medical leadership?
Financial Ties Between Medical Association Leaders and Industry
This 2020 BMJ study examined industry payments to 328 leaders of 10 influential U.S. professional medical associations. Nearly three-quarters had financial ties to pharmaceutical or medical-device companies, rising to 80% among leaders who were physicians. Altogether, those leaders were linked to nearly $130 million in payments, with a median of $31,805 per leader. The amounts varied dramatically between organizations, from a median of $212 among leaders of the American Psychiatric Association to $518,000 for the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Hoover Ball
A competitive rest-day game with a medicine ball
In this 2003 article, Coach Glassman introduces Hoover Ball as a fun way to turn a medicine ball into a competitive sport. The basic game resembles volleyball: players catch a medicine ball and throw it over a net, trying to place it where the opposing team can’t catch it. Coach experimented with different team sizes and ball weights, finding that smaller teams produced an especially athletic game, with powerful throws that incorporated the hips and trunk much like a clean or kettlebell swing.

Less Sugar, Lower Disease Risk
Sugar Rationing in Early Life Protected Against Chronic Disease
This 2024 Science study used the end of British sugar rationing in 1953 as a natural experiment to examine the long-term effects of sugar exposure early in life. During rationing, sugar intake was roughly consistent with current dietary guidelines; after restrictions ended, consumption nearly doubled while intake of protein, fat, fruits, and vegetables changed relatively little. Researchers compared more than 60,000 people who experienced different amounts of rationing from conception through their first two years of life.

How Do We Get Fat
Why we get fat, what determines where calories go, and what happens when we look beyond energy balance.
This 2016 article explores why we gain fat and challenges the idea that obesity can be explained simply by eating too many calories and moving too little. Gary Taubes examines the role of hormones, particularly insulin, in regulating how the body stores and releases fat—and asks whether the foods we eat may influence fat accumulation before changes in total calorie intake even enter the conversation.
